I was wondering about the buy out of Alltel by Verizon. Does that mean that current Alltel customers will become Verizon customers? If so, when will this take place?

Great question. Most Alltel Wireless customers will be converted to Verizon Wireless in the upcoming months with no additional effort by the customer. However, as part of the regulatory approval process, a select number of ZIP codes in which both Alltel and Verizon Wireless offer service will not merge carriers. In other words, Alltel customers in those ZIP codes will remain Alltel customers unless they voluntarily change carriers (early termination fees may apply). For those of you that are in integrated ZIP codes, you can choose to keep your Alltel cell phone or purchase a Verizon Wireless device. If you choose to change to Verizon Wireless before the official conversion, you may face early termination fees from Alltel Wireless.
Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, the Omnia will not work outside of the U.S. It is exclusively a CDMA technology phone and therefore cannot be used on GSM frequencies outside of the U.S.
If you are interested in a phone that you can use internationally, Verizon's Tour, Storm, Ozone, Renown, and Saga all have GSM capabilities.

I noticed that if I were to buy a blackberry device, I'd have to sign up for a contract requiring web service @ a rate of around $80 per month. Is this true for all smartphones from Verizon or just the Blackberry devices?

Technically, the data requirements for all Verizon Smartphone and BlackBerry devices are are same -- Either a $30 monthly fee for unlimited data and personal web-based email, or a $45 monthly fee for unlimited data, personal web-based email, and corporate email. Therefore, the cheapest option on either the Omnia or a Blackberry would be $70 per month ($39.99 for a Basic 450 plan and $30 for unlimited data).

Unfortunately, Verizon Wireless requires that you use purchase a monthly data plan with the Omnia. I think you're going to run into this problem with any Verizon device that is capable of reading and editing xls files.

There are not large differences, primarily 6.5 has a new home screen and a menu more geared towards touchscreens intended for using a finger rather than a stylus - as well a running a little more quickly and some changes in user experience.
While there still may be more announcements regarding upgrades, the Samsung Omnia™ is not currently expected to receive one. The Samsung Omnia™ 2 will be upgradeable.

Expert Rating: 3.7
by Joni Blecher -- March 31st 2009
The Samsung Omnia is a smartphone thats equal parts business and entertainment. It comes loaded with Windows Mobile 6.1 professional edition complete with mobile editions of the popular Microsoft Office apps. However, thanks to Samsungs TouchWiz interface thats all about personalizing the main touchscreen display and the Omnias video and music features its fun to use as well. If thats not enough theres a 5-megapixel camera and WiFi onboard. In short, the Samsung Omnia is a lot of phone and if youre willing to put in the time to master it, this smartphone could be a good fit.

The basic phone functions on the Samsung Omnia all work great, and then there are the many business applications that are a must for an executive or student. There is a great media player, amazing camera, not to mention several other media toys such as video and FM radio. Once you figure this one out, you won't be caught without it.
